NETWORK ENGINEER

Network & Infrastructure Operational Support Project - As the largest school system in the nation, serving over 900,000 students across 1,800 schools, DIIT provides essential IT solutions, including data centers, networks, devices, and support, to enhance student learning and optimize operations. DIIT is responsible for ensuring reliable technology access for students and staff, supporting the DOE’s commitment to equity and educational excellence.


DIIT is seeking operational support resources to strengthen infrastructure, improve system performance, streamline processes, and ensure consistent, reliable IT services across the DOE.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Network Engineer will support the design, configuration, deployment, operations, and management of Cisco network infrastructure across schools and administrative offices. This role ensures adherence to DOE Network Standards and involves collaboration with integration vendors and other DIIT engineering teams. The Network Engineer will troubleshoot technical issues during implementation, manage progress reports, and escalate issues as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design & Implementation: Oversee the design, implementation, and operation of network infrastructure hardware and Data Center infrastructure environments to DOE Network Standards. Ensure that the final network designs align with documented specifications.
  • Vendor Coordination: Work with the integration vendor to ensure and enforce adherence to DIIT network standards throughout the engineering and implementation phases for network infrastructure equipment.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Provide planned network documentation, coordinate installation activities, track installations, and document them to ensure best practices are followed. Provide appropriate reports, showing work completions, network analysis, and configurations.
  • Collaboration & Troubleshooting: Interface with other DIIT engineering teams and resolve technical issues that arise during implementation, operations, and testing in piloting a solution.
  • Process Tracking: Track appropriate processes and documentation and ensure that the final design mirrors the documentation.
  • Network Management: Lead, develop, configure, maintain, support, and optimize all new and existing network hardware to enable school or data center integration with the production network environment. Recommend network hardware for DIIT infrastructure environments.
  • Support & Monitoring: Support deployment, monitoring, inventory control, and reporting. Create configuration templates and automate processes for network refreshes. Oversee network installation quality and verify operational readiness.
  • Quality Assurance: Provide Quality Assurance to deployment projects and day-to-day operations to upkeep schools and central infrastructure operations.
  • As-Built Verification: Validate and verify the network integrator's work, ensuring it adheres to DOE network standards.

MANDATORY SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Note: Candidates who do not have the mandatory skills will not be considered
    • 7+ years of experience supporting daily operations in routing, switching, firewalls, wireless networks, and VPN technologies.
    • 7+ years of hands-on experience with Cisco Nexus and Catalyst Switches (6xxx, 5xxx, 4xxx, 29xx, 19xx), Cisco Routers (7500, 7200, 4000, 3600, 2600), Cisco VPN 3000, and related devices.
    • 7+ years of experience with hands-on configuration of Cisco switches (C9K, 68XX, 4XXX, 29XX), Cisco routers (C8XXX, ISR 29XX, ISR 4XXX), Cisco ASA 55XX firewalls, and Meraki MS devices.
    • 4+ years of experience working with large LAN/WAN infrastructures and knowledge of communication protocols, Cisco equipment, and networking technologies.
    • 2+ years of experience creating network diagrams, floor plans, and schematics using Visio.
    • 2+ years of experience responding to emergency calls in the evenings and on weekends for WAN/LAN outages.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to a non-technical audience.
    • Detail-oriented and process-focused with strong problem-solving abilities.
